For those that don't know what a chinese gybe is I'll explain it to you. A chinese gybe is often referred to as a death roll. It is when you are sailing along downwind and the boat flips or broaches to windward and then the boom comes crashing over at Mach 10. After this happens you get 'pinned' or held down on your side. This usually happens because you have a spinnaker up and when you are pinned down the spinnaker has fallen in the water and fills up with water acting as a weight and holding you down. You can uncleat the halyard and the boat will start to upright itself but the spinnaker stays in the water. Now you have to pull the spinnaker out of the water and this is often called shrimping!
Chinese gybes aren't fun and something usually breaks when this happens!
