Funding beach renourishment in parts of Anna Maria Island is in question.
MANATEE COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Just when they thought their problem was solved, some Anna Maria Island homeowners could be facing the same old dilemma.
Much needed beach renourishment on the island has been put on hold as the Department of Environmental Protection has announced it won't fund the project.
Joan Dickenson, who lives on the island, used to have a beach in her backyard. She has been fighting for more sand for her disappearing island for eight years. She thought funding had been secured.
But recently came the word that environmental protection money won't pay for the job, because that portion of the island isn't on the Gulf of Mexico - it's on the Bay.
That is news to Dickenson, who adamantly said the portion of the island where she lives is on the Gulf.
"I'd like for someone to find the missing map the army corp of engineers did,' Dickenson said. "That designates the pier as the beginning of the Gulf of Mexico.'
Beach residents and city leaders are hoping to clear up the confusion about the extent of the shoreline and determine just where the Gulf ends and the Bay begins. Meanwhile, residents and officials are researching other ways of funding a renourishment project.
