Three Bay area men who decided to sail to Key West ran into trouble as Tropical Storm Fay made its way toward the southern tip of Florida.
Bob Camel and his two friends began sailing from St. Petersburg to Key West on Friday.
The group had planned the trip a while ago and after checking the status of Tropical Storm Fay, they decided to keep their plans.
The men were nearly 200 miles from Fay before they decided to make a U-turn near Marco Island.
The boaters were turned away from a resort near Sanibel Island, and for hours they weathered a squall line in Charlotte Harbor.
"The waves and the wind were pushing us and still we were not making any headway," Camel said.
After 18 hours, the men made it to a bridge in Fort DeSoto and that's when the bridge operator told them that the bridge just locked down because of Tropical Storm Fay. In fact, it had closed just three minutes before the boaters got there.
"And the bridge tender was just remarkable," Camel said. "He said let me see what I can do."
After a radio call, the bridge operator put together a crew, and they spent three hours opening three bridges so Camel and his friends could sail to safety.
"I'm really thankful he gave a darn," Camel said.

I'd like to know the resort in Sanibel that turned them away to make sure I never go there.
