Two sisters were injured Sunday afternoon near marker No. 17 in the Intracoastal Waterway in Clearwater when the personal watercraft they were on exploded, deputies say.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, 19-year-old Heather Davis was on the personal watercraft with her sister, 16-year-old Tiffany Davis, when it exploded at about 12:30 p.m. while the watercraft was next to a sheriff's office boat.

Deputy Richard Bennett had written a citation because neither of the sisters was wearing a life jacket. Bennett instructed them to return to the boat ramp because neither of the sisters was in possession of a Florida Boater Identification Card.

According the sheriff's office, the deputy had released the watercraft when he noticed the operator could not get it to start. The deputy maneuvered the patrol boat next to the watercraft and grabbed the handle bar of the watercraft to steady it. The personal watercraft then exploded without warning and knocked both females into the water.

Bennett pulled them onto the boat and called for paramedics. The sisters were transported to Morton Plant Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy was not injured.

According to the sheriff's office, the personal watercraft did not appear to be leaking fuel and the owner is responsible for removing it. The patrol vessel was not damaged.
