Races are held the first Saturday of the month. Oct. - May. Races will be canceled if there are high winds and/or seas. A skippers' meeting is held at 10:00 A.M. at the Pavilion in Higel Park to announce the course, review the starting sequence, PHRF handicaps, and VHF channel to monitor during the race. Races start outside the Venice Inlet at 12:00 P.M. which means the 5 min sequence begins at 11:55 A.M. Also, volunteers to assist with race committee are welcome.

Wind!! No Wind?? Key West Race Week

No wind=No Racing....in Sailboats.

This is how you get statistically perfect sailing conditions. Monday we had 30 knots and too much to race and today 4 knots and not enough to sail. The average of that is 17 knots. Perfect, right? Just kidding. In reality, Key West is one of the best venues in the world for racing sailboats. Just a bit of bad luck this week.

Tomorrow is supposed to be good; 8-13 knots of wind. I am sure the race committee will be eager to get three races in so it will be another long, tough day like yesterday. But tomorrow is a long way off right now and most of the 2500 sailors are well into their third Margarita or Mudslide at this point. Good money making afternoon for Key West.

SARASOTA -- The sound of crunching wood and snapping masts drew attention to the 10th Street boat ramp on Wednesday as city workers turned rundown boats into rubble.

Using the long metal arms of an excavator and the scoop of a bulldozer, workers folded five boats in half and loaded them onto the back of a waiting dump truck.

This is the last stop for "derelict" craft that are spotted by police in Sarasota Bay.

Police tagged 14 boats in August as derelict, or having no means of getting under way. Owners spoke up for nine of the craft, and the remaining five were destroyed.

Police conduct sweeps of the bay a few times a year, and they tag derelict craft with bright orange stickers. The owners have five days to contact the police and fix the boats.

If the owner does not contact the police, the boats are taken and destroyed, a practice that has drawn criticism from some boat owners who complained they did not have enough time to move or repair their craft.

The owners of the boats destroyed on Wednesday had about two months.

Marine Patrol Capt. Eddie Howell said the boats were all in terrible condition, and one owner did not seem to mind when police hauled it off.

"He said the roaches were so bad he couldn't take it," Howell said. "He showed me the bite marks."

Weather delays Key West regatta http://www.sailmonster.com/article/article_101/ http://www.sailmonster.com/article/article_101/ Thu, 24 Jan 2008 11:16:51 -0500 Sailmonstermomma http://www.sailmonster.com/article/article_101/ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

KEY WEST, Fla. -- Light winds Wednesday postponed the Acura Key West 2008 sailing regatta for the second time this week.
Officials hope to get at least one match in Thursday, but the weather forecast calls for light winds most of the day.
The race was canceled Monday, the first day of the planned five-day regatta, because of winds in excess of 30 mph and rough seas officials deemed as too risky.

BACK IN BUSINESS AT ACURA KEY WEST 2008 http://www.sailmonster.com/article/article_102/ http://www.sailmonster.com/article/article_102/ Thu, 24 Jan 2008 21:08:51 -0500 sailmonster_hannah http://www.sailmonster.com/article/article_102/ (January 24, 2008) There was much rejoicing around the Conch Republic on
Thursday. The wind gods smiled on Acura Key West 2008, presented by Nautica,
delivering excellent racing conditions and bringing much joy to both
competitors and organizers. Early forecasts for Thursday were not favorable
and talk on the dock was that another day of racing might be lost. Racing had
been abandoned on Monday because of too much wind and Wednesday as a result
of too little.

However, conditions proved even better than expected with the wind starting
at 5-8 knots from the southwest then clocking around to the north and
increasing to 12 knots. That allowed for two races on all four courses and
resulted in an awful lot of happy faces when the boats returned to port.
“What a surprise! We had very nice sailing conditions today, the best we’ve
had all week,” said Dave Ullman, who holds fourth place in Melges 24 class.
“It didn’t look promising last night, but if any of us could really predict
the weather, we would be in a different business.”

There was minimal shakeup in the standings with the lead changing hands in
only five of 16 classes. However, the difference between the first and second
boat in the other 11 classes is six points or less and things could change
dramatically before this series concludes. It sets the stage for the final
day at Acura Key West 2008 with organizers moving the first gun up one hour
and planning to conduct three races, with early forecasts calling for 15-20
knot winds.
